20th District Cadet Youth Group
The “CYG” (20th District Cadet Youth Group) is a group of Cadets/Youth Members/Junior Members, that serve on 20th District ambulance corps. The “CYG” is a group of EMTs, EMRs which also includes members that are away at college (when on breaks), that can meet, learn and refine their EMS skills, create friendships, learn leadership skills, increase their confidence and contribute much more to their 20th District squads.
Mission Statement To provide better patient care by advancing the skill levels, commitment, confidence, and longevity of Cadet/Youth/Junior members.
Cadet and Youth Members are Encouraged To Join
Any Cadet or Youth member of the 20th District is encouraged to join. The age limit for “CYG” is 16 years of age through college. A frequent question is “Won’t I be senior member once I turn 18?” The answer is yes, but as you will read, one of the goals of being part of the “CYG” will be a structure that enforces certification renewal. Our meetings will include both elective and core CEU classes. (Presently, many Cadets that are away at college are unable to ride at age 19 or 20 because they did not re-cert.) If you are in college, your corps wants you to ride on breaks and we want you to share your experiences with younger Cadets. If you are part of your college's EMT squad, CYG would like to learn about that. Younger members want to learn the importance of networking.

Meeting Content
CYG will meet approximately once per month, to discuss issues, train, meet with peers, and have some fun. A successful “CYG” will expand the capabilities of the 20th District, EMSCouncil of New Jersey (NJSFAC), and their participating squads. The meetings will consist of a drill proceeded by a business meeting. The “CYG” will be led by our own officer structure and report to the 20th District. We will be mentored by 20th District Delegates.

Benefits to Cadets/Youth Members

- Receive a standardized experience across squads.
- Cross train on different equipment.
- Prepare for a future in EMS and/or medicine.
- Make professional life-long connections with other Cadets, senior members from other squads and members of the 20th District.
- Prepare “CYG” members for collegiate EMS involvement such as campus squads and/or the National Collegiate EMS Foundation.
- Cadets learn about resources available outside of their agencies.
- Strengthen Cadets involvement in the EMSCNJ.
- Students that are enrolled in EMT Basic class, that are part of a participating squad, will have the advantage of participating in drills for the purpose of motivation, mentoring and group study partnerships.
Benefits to the 20th District Corps
- Longevity & Retention - Cadets usually join and get their certificates at 16/17 years old. That certification most often expires 6/30, when they reach 19/20 years old. At the same time, they are often between their 1st and 2nd semesters of college. By instituting this program, more Cadets will be able to maintain their certifications via the 24 elective CEUs and A, B, and C Refreshers. When Cadets get back at the end of their spring semesters, the 20th District and Cadets, who by now may be senior members, can ride. CYG will organize Blood-Borne Pathogen and CPR training to make them eligible to ride through the summer.
- Camaraderie between squads - The creation of the 20th District Cadets would allow our district to build a closer relationship between corps. This will be especially valuable for those CYG members that stay local for school, or remain in the community after school.
- CYG members will increase member awareness of the 20th District and EMSCNJ objectives.
- Better Trained EMTs means better care patient care.
- CYG can staff special events at participating corps.
- CYG can help recruiting Cadets for your squad.
